Banksy

The reason for such a piece is quite unconventional. It borders on “meaningful vandalism” to portray a deeply meaningful message.  It features a wall as the anonymous artist canvas. The spray-canned illustration narrates an Iraqi little girl checking a soldier for dangerous weapons. The image addresses the reality of today’s wars in the Middle East through the use of an ironic narrative.

Banksy’s work is similar to a lot of general stencil graphite pieces but resembles a lot of comic book art and pop art. The  gun on the side of the soldier is a symbol violence and blood shed. Banksy has chosen to you the AK47 gun because it is the gun that most people most people associate with war. It is also the gun that has killed the most people in the world to date.

This is not a piece that has a format to create on. It is placed on a canvas that is constantly evolving. This is the most important difference between Banksy’s graffiti and many other artists.  Banksy may have chosen this rough wall that has been vandalised to show how foreign soldier vandalise the privacy of many innocent people. The colours that are used stereotypically denote the individuals in the composition. For example dark kaki clothing with black boots and a gun for the soldier. This contrasts with the bight pink dress that the innocent little girl is wearing.

Banksy uses spray-cans and stencilling to compose most of his pieces. We can tell this by some of the feathered edges of the figures and the sharp stencilled edges of the girl’s legs.

I think the target audience for this image is the law enforces who try to prevent this kind of vandalism. They are directly provoked through this type of art. In this particular piece they are also featured in it. Banksy also aims his personal “campaign” at the general public. In my opinion its almost like an advertisement of  reality and urging people to do something about it, in particular our government.

I think the piece and its surrounding create a mood that is unsettling. The image of a girl searching a soldier is unheard of.  I think Banksy is using the innocent little girl as a metaphor for all innocent people who are being killed by these soldier.
